Throughout this blog you’ll see the Girls as they free roam around some of our projects or help us with projects . The Girls are Buff Orpington chickens that act more like dogs than chickens. The Orpington is a breed of chicken named after the town of Orpington, Kent, in south-east England. It was bred to be an excellent layer with good meat quality. ( Don’t tell them that, I’d never hurt my girls !!) Its large size and soft appearance together with its rich colour and gentle contours make it very attractive, and as such its popularity has grown as a show bird rather than a utility breed.(My girls are Beautiful). I’ve also heard them described as the golden retrievers of the chicken world. So far once they started laying they’ve given me an brownish egg a day each. One of the girls even gave us a few double yolks !!!
These are our first chickens ever and they are making it a pleasure to learn because they are so sweet and like to follow you around. Oh and if anyone ever says hens are quiet , they haven’t seen my girls the see me and get loud !!
